While the Blues haven't had the season they'd hoped for on the field this year, Carlton assistant coach John Barker says there are promising signs.

Speaking on SEN this week, the backline coach said there has been noticeable improvements across the playing group.

"We're fairly disappointed with the win/loss column at this point in time," Barker said.

"But we're somewhat optimistic about some of the young talent that's coming through.

"Even the guys that have been here for a little while are starting to grow as well."

New recruit Andrejs Everitt has had an impressive year so far.

He notched up a career-high 23 disposals and kicked two majors in the Round 16 clash with St Kilda.

Barker said Everitt's versatility has been a real benefit to the team.

"He's been very good for us," Barker said.

"When he's played in defence, he's done a really good job in shutting down his opponent, and he's also given us some real dash off the half-back line.

"And the fact that he can hit the scoreboard and be an offensive tool has meant that he is a bit of a weapon in a run-with role."

Barker also sang the praises of power-forward Levi Casboult, who has noticeably grown in confidence.

"What we were trying to do over the pre-season is to get a little bit more aggression out of him (Casboult) and a bit more confidence," Barker said.

"Probably a little bit more confidence in his body and understanding that he's a really strong, big, powerful guy.

"We are hopeful that he will become a really consistent, tall forward for us because he creates such a good contest when he's playing good footy."
