Primary school students from Melbourne’s northern corridor amassed at Visy Park on Wednesday 17 September to take part in the 2014 Multicultural Schools Cup.

Five schools in total participated in the round-robin competition including Carlton Primary School, Carlton Gardens Primary School, Holy Name Primary School, Australian International Academy and Lalor North Primary School.

Held as part of the AFL’s Multicultural Schools Program, all participants were encouraged to focus on the core themes of the program including teamwork, respect, harmony, leadership and fair play.

While all teams involved displayed a competitive spirit, Carlton Primary School took out the top honours in both the boys and the girls categories.

Carlton’s Fan Development, Diversity and Community Trainee Jake Crawford praised the program for its ability to involve students from a diverse range of backgrounds in a uniquely Australian pastime.

“The Multicultural Schools Cup is a fantastic initiative as it provides migrant, refugee and newly arrived students an opportunity to experience an Australian sport firsthand,” Crawford said.

“Overall it was a truly positive experience for everyone involved and the Carlton Football Club congratulates all the students who took part."
