The negotiations are well underway but Carlton has not completed any trades on day one of the AFL’s NAB Trade Period.

The Blues are in talks with the Western Bulldogs to try to secure Liam Jones, who has indicated he wants to don the navy blue jumper.

But Western Bulldogs list manager Simon Dalrymple has told Trade Radio there’s a long way to go before a deal is done.

"We're a fair way apart at the moment,” Dalrymple said.

“Key forwards who dominated state league footy don't grow on trees. We’re certainly not going to give up Liam without getting the adequate reward for him.”

Giant Kristian Jaksch is another player who has been linked to Carlton. His manager Matt Bain says Jaksch “has a slight preference to go to Carlton at the moment."

Carlton’s GM – Football Operations Andrew McKay has confirmed interest in Jaksch, along with Jones and his Bulldog’s teammate Jason Tutt. While he says Jeff Garlett and Mitch Robinson are on the move.

"There's a bit of interest in both (Mitch Robinson and Jeff Garlett) – we think we'll be able to get something done with both of them,” McKay said.

Meanwhile both Carlton and Fremantle are being touted as being in the hunt for out-of-contract Bomber Ben Howlett. It’s believed the 25-year-old midfielder is keen to stay in Melbourne, which could put the Blues in the box seat.
