It’s been a rollercoaster of a week for Billy Gowers.

After the disappointment of not being selected by the Blues in the NAB AFL National Draft on November 27, he was thrilled when his name was called by Carlton in Wednesday’s Rookie Draft.

The 18-year-old, who was selected by Carlton at pick 6, says he was at home with family as the draft unfolded.

"I was just watching it on the laptop with my sister,” Gowers said.

"I just saw my name .. pick six I think it was. I'm absolutely rapt to be at Carlton."

Recognised for his versatility and ability to read the play, Gowers was recruited to the Blues from TAC Cup side, the Oakleigh Chargers.

The new recruit says he's looking forward to putting his versatility to good use at Carlton.

"I played a half-back/wing kind of role, sliding into the midfield a little bit, and I think at the Carlton Football Club I'll be doing the same sort of thing,” Gowers said.

"I might be playing a wing, (or) a half-forward – mainly an outside role."

The son of former Brisbane and Hawthorn player, Andrew Gowers, Billy is thrilled to be following a similar path to his dad.

"Like many young boys, following in your father's footsteps is obviously a dream which most kids have,” Gowers said.

"I followed him around as a young kid and (now) finally have the opportunity to make my own history."

It's 10 weeks until the start of the 2015 NAB Challenge and Gowers says his focus over that time lies in gaining the respect of his new teammates.

"I haven't really set any major goals as yet," Gowers said.

"I'm just looking to gain some respect from the playing group and the coaching staff – head down, bum up."
