Hikes, water-sports and teamwork – that's what was on the agenda during camps for Carlton's leadership group and first year players.

Held in picturesque Lorne, it was a fantastic opportunity for both groups to spend some time away from Visy Park .

Carlton's Director of Development and Coaching, Rob Wiley, says the purpose behind the camp was to bring everyone together in a relaxed setting.

"It was a great way for the newly formed leadership group to get away from the Club,” Wiley said.

"They joined in a few activities together mainly centred around leadership, trust and communication.

"We also made the time to sit and discuss what it is we want to achieve going forward, and what procedures we can put in place as a leadership group."

Meanwhile, the Blues' brand new draftees and rookies also took on a similar approach.

Wiley says it was a couple of days well spent getting to know each other.

"The same principals were applied," Wiley said.

"However what was different is that Mick (Malthouse) really wanted to get to know these kids, so he asked them a lot about their life and their thoughts on things – it was great.

"To get down to the basics of understanding a person is so important. When it comes to coaching, the more you understand someone, the more that you can work with them."
