Although the Northern Blues fell one point short to Williamstown at the weekend, their coach says there are plenty of positive signs.

“It was a really encouraging performance by the guys,” said coach Luke Webster.

Carlton-listed player Mark Whiley performed well with a 28-possession game.

“He’s (Whiley) been able to find the footy through the midfield…he had eight or nine clearances…he’s doing a lot of hard things in the stoppages for us," Webster said.

“He’ll be one who puts his name up for senior selection this week."

Goalkicking will be a focus at training this week, as accuracy in front of goal cost the team dearly.

“We’ll continue to keep working on that throughout training sessions and hopefully it will improve on the weekend,” he said.

This weekend, like the senior side, the Northern Blues will play on ANZAC Day, when they take on Port Melbourne at North Port Oval.

The important message about sacrifice, mateship and unity is not lost on the players.

“It’s a great opportunity for our players to play on ANZAC Day, a lot of people sacrificed their own lives to make sure that our country is safe…they paid the ultimate price," Webster said.

“We want our players showing the same endeavour and the same sacrifices out on the ground…we’ll be talking to the guys about that…we want to go in as a united 23 group and put a good performance in."
