Carlton midfielder Bryce Gibbs says the Blues are looking to build momentum, after recording their first win of the season against St Kilda on Anzac Day.

Gibbs, who had 23 disposals and kicked two goals, joked the team might have to play in New Zealand “more often”.

St Kilda made a fast start, at one stage leading Carlton by 25 points, but Gibbs was positive the team could work their way back.

“After a slow start the boys regrouped nicely and it was nice to come away with the win,” Gibbs said.

“We had to keep grinding it out – we were well aware they’re a good starting team – and to not panic. We knew if we kept grinding away we’d hopefully overrun them.”

Gibbs was also pleased to see the development of Carlton’s younger players.

The Blues blooded two more debutants in the match, with Blaine Boekhorst and Matt Dick both playing their first AFL game.

Meanwhile Patrick Cripps was dominant in the midfield with 33 disposals and 11 tackles.

“Some of the younger players really stepped up which was a great sign, Patty Cripps was fantastic in the middle and even Tommy Bell (who kicked four goals) reckons he’s going to win the Coleman now,” Gibbs said with a smile.

Turning to Round 5, Gibbs said this week is going to be a “fantastic” occasion and he’s looking forward to being back on the big stage at the MCG for Friday night football.

The match is set to mark Mick Malthouse’s 715th as coach, which will see him break Jock McHale’s all-time coaching record.

“Carlton and Collingwood is already a massive game and a massive build up, but this is going to be an extra special week for Mick and for us. Hopefully we can get a win for him,” Gibbs said.

“He certainly doesn’t want to put the focus all on him, we’ve still got a job to do and we’ll be looking to get the four points.”

Meanwhile Gibbs says that since arriving at Carlton ahead of the 2013 season, Malthouse has made a positive impact on all of those associated with the club.

“He’s just a really good people person, he has come into the club and he has built such strong relationships with the players and with the people around the club, it’s amazing.

“He definitely gets the best out of you, the best out of the players, the best out the coaches and the people around him as a whole. He’s just a fantastic person to have around the place,” Gibbs said.
