Carlton’s Nick Graham and Levi Casboult have pressed their case for senior selection after solid showings in the Northern Blues’ win over Sandringham.

Coach Luke Webster says Graham played “some terrific footy” to finish with 22 disposals and three goals, while he commended the chasing and tackling efforts of Casboult.

It marked the first win for the Northern Blues this season and Webster says the signs are positive.

“I’ve been really rapt with the way the guys have been playing footy and going about our business over the last three weeks – and it was great to finally get a win,” Webster said.

“The thing that I really was pleased again about was their effort all the way through the game .. the boys kept fighting.”

Another standout for the Blues was vice-captain Kieran McGuinness who finished with 25 possessions.

McGuinness, a triple-premiership captain at SANFL club Norwood, has taken on a dual role this season with the Northern Blues and as a development coach at Carlton. Webster says his side is reaping the benefits.

“It’s great to have Kieran on board, obviously he brings a wealth of experience in terms of his footy background .. he brings a lot of leadership,” Webster said.

“It also gives the guys a bit of a connection between the Northern Blues and the Carlton players. He’s working with Carlton’s young defenders throughout the week and he’s built that really good relationship – that’s holding us in good stead on game day as well.”

The Northern Blues sit 11th on the ladder after three rounds and take on the bottom-placed Frankston at Frankston Oval on Sunday. Webster says he's expecting a tough contest.

“It’s always tough to go down to Frankston and beat them down there at their home ground, but I think if we continue to play the footy we’re playing we should be there right in the end,” he said.
