Carlton forward Troy Menzel put aside all doubts about his body on the weekend after playing a pivotal role in the Northern Blues’ win over Frankston on Sunday.

Menzel booted two goals from 15 possessions across half-forward, but more importantly showed no ill-effects from the hamstring tightness he endured during his return to injury from a calf complaint in the VFL last weekend.

Menzel also chimed in with five tackles, including three in the forward 50 in a standout performance.

The 20-year-old said it was nice to experience a win for the first time in 2015.

“The body is definitely feeling a lot better than it did this time last week, I’ll tell you that much,” Menzel said.

“I managed to get through (on Sunday), which was important.

“The aim was obviously to get a full game into me, and whatever I could do to put my best foot forward for the team is a bonus.”

The young forward credited his team for weathering Frankston in the final term. The Dolphins had the wind advantage in their chase of 33-point three-quarter-time deficit.

“With the start we had, we knew they would come at us in the second quarter,” Menzel said.

“It was a big advantage going down to that one end. We knew if we got some goals at the other end then we’d be hard to catch.

“Frankston kicked a couple of quick goals early (in the final quarter), but the boys kept their heads and made some smart decisions with the footy and really showed some guts and determination.”

With the Northern Blues playing North Ballarat in a curtain-raiser at 1.15pm before Carlton’s AFL fixture with GWS Giants on Saturday, Menzel will be playing at Etihad Stadium regardless of which team he finds himself in.

However he believes that the VFL side is playing a brand of football that should see them 3-2 by Saturday afternoon.

“The boys have shown that even in the first two rounds that they can play some very good footy," he said.

“There's some unlucky losses there in a way, but if we can come out and keep playing the style of footy we’ve been playing, we’re a big chance to go 3-2.”
