Carlton coach Michael Malthouse says he must instill confidence in his players ahead of Friday night’s clash with Geelong.

The Blues have just the one win so far this season and a lack of confidence is one of the hurdles that Malthouse says they need to overcome.

“It’s a massive job by all our staff to get the confidence up to win games of footy,” Malthouse said during his weekly media conference.

The coach emphasised that winning games of football is one way to quickly re-establish self-belief within the playing group.

And while that may be easier said than done, Malthouse said his team is trying.

“You’ve got to restore confidence and the only way to restore confidence is a good victory,” he said.

“It’s not as if we’re sitting here not wanting a good victory, we want a good victory.

“If we do that (win) it clears up a lot of the uncertainties.”

The Blues take on the Cats on Friday night at Etihad Stadium to kick off Round 8 of the AFL.
