We all stand on Sacred Ground: Learn, Respect and Celebrate – that’s the theme for NAIDOC Week, which kicks off today.

NAIDOC, which stands for National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee, is always held in the first full week of July.

Like the AFL’s Indigenous Round, NAIDOC Week gives Australians a chance to recognise and celebrate the culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

From morning teas to dance ceremonies, there are celebrations happening all over Australia, including Ikon Park.

One of Carlton’s first Indigenous players, Syd Jackson, will return to the Club on Wednesday as part of a special club announcement to coincide with NAIDOC Week.

The Blues’ have four current Indigenous players – Andrew Walker, Chris Yarran, Liam Jones and Clem Smith. Walker’s uncle, Clive Atkinson, who hails from Yorta Yorta Nation near Echuca, designed the players' Indigenous guernsey this year.

Also to coincide with NAIDOC Week, the AFL today announced the 2015 Flying Boomerangs and World Team development squads.

The Flying Boomerangs is a personal development and leadership program for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young men, while the World Team is made up of the best upcoming AFL multicultural players from across the nation.
