‘Know your role, play your role’ – it’s a mantra that’s often heard at sporting clubs and rings true for Carlton veteran Kade Simpson.

Despite the Blues enduring a disappointing season, Simpson has remained consistent across the backline.

The 31-year-old defender, who won Carlton’s best and fairest in 2013, has averaged 24-disposals per game this year, placing him second in the team rankings behind skipper Marc Murphy.

He puts his consistency down to a combination of experience and understanding.

“I think I just really understand my role at the club and the role on game day that I have to play,” Simpson said.

“Johnny (Barker) gives me a lot of confidence to go out there and play my part, so that seems to be working at the moment.”

With four rounds of the season remaining the Blues sit 17th on the ladder and will face Brisbane in a bottom-of-the-table clash at the Gabba on Saturday night.

Simpson says the match is another opportunity to learn and get games into the side’s inexperienced players.

“The next four weeks we're really looking to improve and if we can take a few wins along the way that would be nice,” Simpson said.

“We can't really look too far ahead, we've just got to get the process right and if that works then the results will take care of themselves.”
