As Carlton and Hawthorn prepare to play again, only five weeks since their last encounter, Blues fans will be hoping it’s not a case of déjà vu on Saturday afternoon.

When these two teams met in Round 17, the Hawks recorded a 138-point win over Carlton, the worst defeat in the Club’s history.

In that match Carlton captain Marc Murphy led the way in his 200th AFL game with 37 touches, while Hawthorn’s Jordan Lewis had 36 disposals and Jack Gunston kicked six goals.

Carlton will have extra motivation this week as Andrew Carrazzo and David Ellard will run out in the navy blue for the last time, after announcing their retirements. Carrazzo will play his 194th and final game, while David Ellard’s final game will mark game number 63.

During the week Blues midfielder Ed Curnow said the team will have a ‘”fair dinkum crack” at the premiership contenders on Saturday afternoon at the ‘G.

“We want to ride on the back of Andy’s story…he puts in 100 per cent every time and he plays for the jumper – we just want to have that never-give-in attitude,” he told Radio Sport National.

“The task is huge but we want to hold our heads up coming off the ground on the weekend, and give Andy and our supporters something to feel good about at the end of the season.”

Carlton has made three changes to its side, with Andrew Carrazzo coming in for his last match, along with Nick Holman and Clem Smith, while Chris Yarran (hamstring), Sam Docherty (hip) and Brad Walsh (omitted) will miss the final game of the season.

Hawthorn is coming off a 72-point victory over the bottom-placed Brisbane Lions and Hawks’ defender Grant Birchall said they want to continue their good form heading into September.

"We just want to get into some really good habits and play some good footy, some good consistent four quarters of footy leading into finals,” Birchall said.

"I think we've been playing some reasonable footy. I think we'll focus on our starts to games – particularly this week it will be a bit of a focus – so I think we're building quite nicely.

"They've still got some quality players (and) it's Carrazzo's last game, so they'll be up for that," he said.

Unlike other teams in the top eight, Hawthorn has made limited changes to its side with Sam Mitchell and Paul Puopolo coming in for Luke Breust and Billy Hartung.

Carlton and the Hawks go head-to-head on Saturday afternoon at the MCG, with the match kicking off at 4.40pm AEST.
