In the build-up to the 2017 AFL season, Carlton’s sights are firmly set on a Round 1 victory.

The Blues will attempt to tame the Tigers at the MCG on Thursday 23 March, and despite being faced with an in-form Richmond, senior coach Brendon Bolton has placed confidence in his side.

“They’ve (Richmond) had some good form over the pre-season,” Bolton told RSN on Friday morning.

“They’ve recruited well but we’ll come out firing and take it up to them.

“We’re out to win it (first match).”

The season opener “can’t come quick enough” for Bolton, who is preparing to enter his second season at the helm.

After he took the reins at the end of 2015, Carlton embarked on a journey that began with a “dramatic” reset.

And with less than one week until the beginning of the 2017 season, Bolton acknowledged the opportunity that this year would present for his side.

“We get to see our youngsters grow and develop over the next few years to set up some sustainable success for us in the future,” he said.

“Last year we wanted to be defined by pressure and we’re not going to shy away from that (this season).

“But we want to keep building depth …. we’re also looking for some consistency.”

With Carlton set to make its return to the footy field in six days' time, Bolton challenged the Carlton faithful to outnumber the yellow and black and show its support for the Blues.

“We’re hoping the stands are packed with Bluebaggers next Thursday,” he said.

“It’s obviously a privilege to be involved in the season opener.

“(I’m) really excited.”

Carlton will take on Richmond in a blockbuster Thursday night clash at the MCG from 7:20pm.
