Ahead of the 2017 AFLW Grand Final, the AFL has announced the first-ever All-Australian squad of female footballers.

Carlton’s Brianna Davey, Darcy Vescio, Alison Downie and Danielle Hardiman were among the 40-player line-up that was revealed on Wednesday.

Across the inaugural season, the four Blues demonstrated their prolific football talent and proved integral to Carlton’s playing group.

Vescio and Downie featured in all seven of Carlton’s matches, while Davey and Hardiman both missed one game due to injury.

Carlton, GWS Giants and Fremantle each had four players nominated in the squad, one more than the Western Bulldogs but one short of Adelaide and Collingwood.

The undefeated Brisbane Lions dominated the line-up with nine players, while Melbourne was the next most prominent with six of its Demons represented.

A final All-Australian team of 22 players will be announced at the W Awards on Tuesday 28 March.
