DESPITE his team missing out on a Round 5 victory with a narrow 10-point loss against the Eagles on the weekend, Patrick Cripps’ effort has been acknowledged by the AFLCA.

Carlton’s acting captain received the maximum 10 votes in this week’s AFLCA Champion Player of the Year award for his performance against the West Coast Eagles at the MCG on Saturday night.

The reliable midfielder brought defensive pressure against a gritty West Coast, amassing match-highs in disposals (34), contested possessions (19), clearances (eight), tackles (11) and inside-50s (7).

Speaking to media following the match, senior coach Brendon Bolton recognised the 23-year-old’s “outstanding effort".

“He’s carrying most of the load on ball… he’s a warrior. He’s a solider. We love him,” Bolton said.

Six players – Cripps, Ben Cunnington, Nat Fyfe, Touk Miller, Sebastian Ross and Paul Seedsman – received 10 votes for their Round 5 performances.

Carlton defender Kade Simpson was also rewarded for his effort against West Coast with six votes, while speedy midfielder Zac Fisher was given one point.

Cripps will again captain the Blues against the Bulldogs at Etihad Stadium this Friday night from 7.50pm.
