THE Blues are down by 47 points at half-time in their clash with Hawthorn at Etihad Stadium.

A rampaging Hawks piled on eight goals to Carlton's one by the first break, in two terms that saw the Blues struggle to quell Hawthorn's elusive midfield.

FIRST QUARTER

It was a slow start for Carlton, with Hawthorn piling on four majors while the Blues went goalless in the first term.

With six inside 50s to Hawthorn's 14, it was clear the visitors maintained attacking control throughout.

Ed Curnow fought hard against a relentless Hawks, amassing three tackles and a contested possession in the first quarter.

Club debutant Matthew Lobbe was everywhere, with five contested possessions, seven disposals and a tackle in his opening quarter.

Speedy midfielder Zac Fisher came off the ground late in the term after copping a knock to his left leg, and won't return in the second half. The 20-year-old will require scans to assess the damage.

The score at quarter-time was Hawthorn 4.3 (27) to Carlton 0.0 (0).

SECOND QUARTER

The Hawks set the tone after the first change once again, kicking another major within seconds by way of Jack Gunston.

Kade Simpson had the much-needed response for Carlton, snapping a major on the opposite foot.

The 34-year-old had six disposals, three marks and a contested possession in the first half.

After a marking contest saw the defender clash with Liam Jones, Simpson pulled up sore but soldiered on, while Jones copped a knock to the knee and went down to the rooms, with his afternoon over. Like Fisher, he'll require scans to assess the damage.

Jack Silvagni's huge tackle on Hawthorn's Harry Morrison in the midfield returned the momentum to Carlton, but it wasn't to be with an ineffective shot for goal by Simpson ensuing.

Hawthorn didn't relent, piling on another three majors in the second term

The score at half-time is Carlton 1.2 (8) to Hawthorn 8.7 (55).
