Carlton heads into tomorrow's AFLW draft with selection No.3 and a raft of new Blues to welcome. Here's a navy blue outlook on what to expect.

Where the Blues stand

Carlton will take eight picks inside the top 50 in tomorrow’s AFLW draft, including the No.3 pick — the first Vic Metro selection in the draft. The Blues will also have picks 16 and 21 in the second round, with the former to be used on Abbie McKay.

Picks: 3, 16 (Abbie McKay father-daughter selection), 21, 27, 38, 40, 42, 49

History in the making

Following on from the footsteps of her father Andrew, Abbie McKay will make history when she becomes the first father-daughter selection in the AFL Women’s competition. With the ability to play in the midfield and up forward, McKay will be out to forge her own name when she officially becomes a Blue tomorrow.

Drafts gone by

The No.3 pick will join Georgia Gee as early selections on Carlton’s list in 2019, after the speedy midfielder was taken with pick No.12 in last year’s draft. The Blues also know the merit of a late selection, with 2018 best-and-fairest winners Breann Moody and Katie Loynes taken with picks Nos.67 and 110 in the inaugural draft.

Comments from the coach

“We’ve got some history and data that we can go back on to see if they’ve improved or regressed. There’s also what we can build upon if we draft them, or areas which they have to improve on… There’s probably 15 or so players that we’re looking at to bring into the football club.”
