MARC Murphy will remain in Carlton’s leadership group with the former Blues’ skipper saying he was eager to continue playing a role within the space in 2019.

At today’s leadership announcement, Murphy said he, Ed Curnow and Kade Simpson would provide support to joint captains Sam Docherty and Patrick Cripps, with the five completing the leadership group.

“I spoke to 'Doc', 'Crippa' and Bolts before the announcement and they were all really keen to have me in there and I was keen to stick around,” he said.

“I think they’re both really accomplished players and really good leaders of our footy club. Just like Ed and 'Simmo', I’ll be there to support them and I’m looking forward to the new role.

“Those guys are at the right age and they’ve played a lot of good football. They both want to lead the football club going forward.”

Patrick Cripps sung his praise for Murphy, who led the team for six seasons from 2013 until 2018.

He said Murphy would be the perfect sounding board for the two new joint-skippers.

“We’re going to lean on him a lot for advice. Doc and I are pretty young co-captains and it’s an exciting time for both of us," Cripps said.

“Like any footy club there’s going to be challenges throughout the year and Murph has been through the hardest time at Carlton. If something does go wrong, he’s going to be a good guy to get advice off.”
