CARLTON’S VFL affiliate, the Northern Bullants, dropped their second game in a row on the weekend with a 33-point loss to Geelong in an early start at Skilled Stadium on Sunday.

The Bullants now have six wins and four losses for the season and are placed at fifth on the ladder. They are equal on points with the third-placed Port Melbourne and the fourth-placed Box Hill Hawks.

North Ballarat leads the competition with nine wins, one loss, while Williamstown is a game behind on eight wins.

Coach David Teague shares his thoughts on the match and how some of the Carlton-listed players performed.

Both teams only kicked one goal in the first quarter despite both having opportunities to kick more.

In the second quarter, Geelong started to get on top after they ran more consistently from the back half.

They kicked six goals to four to establish a lead at half-time and from then on it was a bit of a fight for us to stay in the game. The Cats had a big quarter in the third and we came back a bit in the last, but didn't take our opportunities to put them under scoreboard pressure.

We're a bit inconsistent at the moment. We've been challenged by a couple of the top teams this year and the boys have stepped up and played really good team football, but at the weekend we were unable to do that.

We're a team that needs 18 to 22 players playing their role for us to be successful and over the past month that hasn't happened. We lost to Collingwood, then came back to beat Williamstown and then we lost to Casey and Geelong.

Hopefully that's a lesson for the players that if we're not all playing together then we're going to find it hard.

Davey Ellard played on Mathew Stokes from Geelong in a tagging role and he finished with 19 possessions to Stokes' 13 which was excellent. He stuck to his task and his determination and the way he went about it was first class.

Stokes had 38 touches the week before, but Davey asked for him - he wanted that challenge and he got the job done.

My post-match address was about the way he went about his footy and that if all the other lads did the same then we'd be very hard to beat.

Jordan Russell was also good for us playing across half-back and on the ball. I thought he won some vital clearances for us and used the ball very well. He layed 10 tackles for the day as well.

Greg Bentley played more as a half-forward instead of on the ball and he finished with five shots on goal which was a good effort. He only snagged two goals, but I thought he adapted to a new role well.

Jake Edwards had a tough job on James Podsiadly, but he finished the day with 11 spoils and competed well.

Cam Cloke played as our first ruckman so he didn't spend a lot of time in the forward line, but he kicked three goals, so when he was forward he was very good. He competed hard in the ruck and gave his all.

We played some really good footy at the start of the year and we've just got to get back to that. We've got to take the game on a little bit more and back ourselves in. We were probably enjoying our footy a bit more earlier in the year and playing for each other, so that's the major focus in terms of training this week.
