Northern Blues

The name of Carlton’s aligned VFL team was officially changed to the Northern Blues at a function at Preston City Oval on Tuesday February 7th, 2012. Carlton has been aligned to the VFL Club previously known as the Northern Bullants since the 2003 season and both clubs enjoy a great working relationship providing numerous benefits for everyone involved.

On field success, including Grand Final appearances, together with the development of the Carlton players have been the key success of the alignment.

In 2012 the association is even stronger under the banner of the Northern Blues under new coach Robert Hyde.

The history of the VFL Club, which was formed in 1882 as the Preston Football Club before becoming the Northern Bullants, will be respected with games to be played at Preston City Oval and Visy Park in 2012. The letters PFC, represent Preston Football Club, will also feature on the back of the Northern Blues playing guernsey.

While the history will be respected the affiliation will extend beyond the playing field under the new name, Northern Blues. Carlton’s important role in the community will be highlighted with work in the northern corridor through both the Carlton Community Program and the Northern Blues Schools program.

Carlton President Stephen Kernahan said the new name launched the next phase in the important alignment.

“Community football in the north will benefit further from our association, including the Northern Football League, junior clubs and the Auskick program. Footballers in the northern region will now see a genuine pathway to elite football through the local junior clubs, Northern Knights Under 18 program, the Northern Blues in the VFL State League and of course Carlton in the AFL.

“Our partnership with the Northern Blues will strengthen our foothold in the northern corridor of Melbourne and benefit football and the local communities,” Kernahan said.
