Carlton’s Tom Bell has revealed he has mates to thank for introducing him to AFL.

Speaking to Croc Media’s Sportsday program this week, the Queenslander said it was a series of fortunate events that led to him taking up the sport at the age of 12.

“I played soccer growing up as a kid,” Bell said.

“It wasn’t until I had a few mates move up from Victoria who brought me across to AFL. They got me into the game from there – I’m very thankful to them for moving up!”

Bell was recruited to Carlton as a 20-year-old through the 2011 rookie draft. The big-bodied midfielder was this year upgraded to Carlton’s primary list and now has 24 AFL games under his belt. He credits Mick Malthouse with helping him take the next step in his career.

“It’s definitely been a few years in the making. I had a few injuries which set me back a little bit, but I think with Mick coming on board coaching it has really helped my football,” Bell said.

“I think I’ve really stepped up another level, so I’m thankful for Mick for coming on board – I think he’s really given me the opportunity.”

Bell is among the Blues travelling to Perth to take on the Dockers at Patersons Stadium on Thursday night. Carlton players are fresh from the bye, and Bell says it’s given them some extra time to study Fremantle.

“We know Fremantle are a very good defensive side so I think we need to exploit that a little bit, “ Bell said.

“They’ve got some very good inside midfield players as well. We know (Nat) Fyfe is a very good player, so I think if we can keep him quiet, hopefully that will help do the job.”
