Carlton's youth are set to gain some more valuable experience when the Blues take on the Hawks at Etihad Stadium on Friday night.

The Blues won't regain any players from injury this week, leaving newcomers including Brad Walsh, Tom Fields, Blaine Boekhorst and Nick Holman right in the mix for selection.

Troy Menzel will be tested at training this week but is expected to play, after being subbed out of the match against Fremantle with a corked quad.

Meanwhile it had been hoped that Irishman Ciaran Byrne would be a chance to return this week, but Head of Football Andrew McKay says 'Casey' has suffered another setback.

“Ciaran Byrne unfortunately hurt his hamstring again, same hamstring but different spot this time, which is really unfortunate after his good game with the Northern Blues the week before,” McKay said.

“He’s out for 4-5 weeks, which is very unfortunate for him and for us because we were looking forward to having him back in the senior team before too long, but now we’re hopeful that he will find his way back just before the end of the year.”

Meanwhile Andrew Walker and Nick Graham are each about one week away from returning from injury and will be considered for selection for Carlton's Round 18 match against North Melbourne.
