What’s in a name? Not what you’d think when it comes to Carlton young gun Blaine Boekhorst.

While the Boekhorst name is Dutch, his father is third generation Australian, the No. 12’s mum hails from India.

“Mum was born in India, in the south I think, and moved over to Western Australia when she was one,” Boekhorst said.

“Because she grew up here she doesn’t really have a strong Indian connection, she never spoke the language or anything like that.

“But we had family in Perth, so when I was younger we would visit them and Nanna would always cook up a good Indian feast – her chicken curries were great.”

Boekhorst grew up in Port Hedland and his family has never returned to India. But the 21-year-old says he would be keen to visit and learn more about the culture – especially after a recent experience at Ikon Park.

“A few weeks ago Ed (Curnow) and I attended a briefing night here at the club with the Sri Lankan community and it was great,” Boekhorst said.

“We met with members of the band and learnt a bit about their culture – it was really interesting. I’m definitely keen to learn more about different cultures, particularly from that part of the world.”

This weekend marks the AFL’s Multicultural Round with Carlton’s game against Collingwood at the MCG the showcase game of the round.

The theme of the round is ‘Many Cultures, One Game’ to celebrate the way that football can bring people together. Boekhorst, who is now six games into his AFL career, says he's witnessed first hand how football can create a sense of belonging.

“I’ve got family friends in Melbourne who are Indian too and they’re right into their football,” he said.

“They’re converted to being Carlton supporters now – they just love footy and they love being involved.”
