PLAYING at Casey Fields for the first time this season, Carlton’s VFLW side unfortunately fell short to the Demons in a tight tussle on Saturday morning.

Kicking with the wind in the last quarter, the Blues couldn’t quite capitalise on their opportunities, booting six behinds to nothing in the final term to ultimately fall short by 10 points.

VFLW senior coach Shannon McFerran assesses the performances of Carlton’s AFLW-listed players in the Round 13 match.

Alison Downie
Stats: 11 disposals, 11 handballs
From the coach:
In her first game of the year, Al rucked for most of the day and made a solid contribution. She gave our onballers first use and her work around the ground was consistent. Al has a great running capacity, so her repeat efforts are a huge plus and she will continue to build on this and use this to her advantage as she heads into the AFLW season.

Georgia Gee
Stats: 21 disposals, 1 goal
From the coach:
This was Georgia’s most consistent game to date. She spent more time on the ball and was able to gather more disposals. As a lightweight, she still manages to play a tough game, however I would like to see Georgia build on her game and run and carry the ball when the opportunity arises. Georgia will continue to work through the midfield in the remainder of our VFLW games.

Sarah Hosking
Stats:
8 disposals, 9 tackles
From the coach:
Once again Sarah worked hard all day in the midfield and was tireless in her efforts. She managed to create scoring opportunities on a number of clearances, but at times was outnumbered.

Reni Hicks

Stats: 6 disposals, 3 tackles
From the coach:
Reni started in the midfield this week, which was a change from her usual position. She was able to use her body and strength around the stoppages and defended well when pushing back. Reni will continue to have a run through the midfield in the remaining games and develop the knowledge and skills she needs to be a solid contributor in the midfield.

Gab Pound
Stats: 20 disposals, 15 kicks
From the coach:
Gab had another great game on Saturday. She spent time down back in the windy conditions and then pushed into the midfield. Her work rate in the midfield has been fantastic over the last couple of weeks and she is able to make an impact at the stoppages. Her ball use has been good and we will continue to develop this with her in the remainder of the season.

Tilly Lucas-Rodd
Stats: 8 disposals, 2 tackles
From the coach:
Tilly spent time on the half-forward flank and in tough conditions, defended solidly. Her ability to shut down her opponent has been great all year. Tilly will continue to work on her offensive running and her ability to set up when transitioning forward.

Darcy Vescio

Stats: 1 goal, 10 tackles
From the coach:
Darcy played a number of roles, working hard down back and managing a number of marks to stop Casey scoring. She worked tirelessly down forward and managed to score a goal. Limited scoring opportunities and windy conditions made it tough for Darcy, however she still managed to have a solid impact on the game.
