Honour the past: No.38

New Blues | Silvagni & O'Dwyer New Blues Ben Silvagni and Finbar O'Dwyer chat to the media following their first training session in the navy blue.

LAST month, Carlton’s 11 newest players were awarded their guernseys as they prepare for life as Blues.

Moving on to the No.38 guernsey, we look at the players who have made the guernsey what it is, and what's to come for the incumbent.

Famous faces
The No.38 guernsey had to wait until 1987 for a premiership player to wear the jumper, when Shane Robertson was part of the team which triumphed over Hawthorn.

A much-loved clubman over a number of years, Robertson played 80 games for the Blues in a career spanning nine years.

It was appropriate that his best season came in the memorable year of 1987: under Robert Walls, Robertson played 20 games and - after two unsuccessful reserves Grand Finals and another loss in 1986 - finally came away with a premiership medal.

The Blues would have to wait until Round 2, 2014 to get a name on the locker of the No.38, with Jeff Garlett being the first player to reach the century of games.

New custodian

Taken with pick No.66 in the 2018 NAB AFL Draft, Finbar O’Dwyer’s arrival at the Blues was marked by being handed the No.38 guernsey.

Tidy in the air and clean at ground level, Finbar O’Dwyer is a versatile young tall who has the attributes to be a damaging forward.

The former Murray Bushrangers forward looms as an exciting prospect for future years, and has a lot of scope for development: he enjoyed a growth spurt of 10cm in 12 months.

There will be a familiar face situated next to O’Dwyer in the locker room, with former schoolmate and now teammate Ben Silvagni next to him in No.37.
