Preview: AFLW Best and Fairest

Prespakis wins 2019 NAB AFLW Rising Star Maddy Prespakis accepts the NAB AFLW Rising Star at the 2019 W Awards.

WITH so many standout performances behind us, who will take out Carlton’s AFLW best and fairest award for season 2019?

Players and guests will come together at Luminare in South Melbourne for what is sure to be a close count on Thursday.

In a season that saw Carlton fall just short of the ultimate success, the competition has recognised our star Blues for their individual performances.

Three Blues received an All-Australian nod with Gab Pound, Kerryn Harrington and Madison Prespakis named in the team.

Skipper Brianna Davey is expected to poll well for her role in the Blues’ finals campaign, but she won’t go unchallenged with Pound and Harrington close competitors.

Capping off her breakout year, Prespakis looks a certainty for the Visy Best First Year Player after receiving both the 2019 NAB AFLW Rising Star award and the AFLPA equivalent.

Now is the time to celebrate the achievements from the Club’s point of view. With three awards up for grabs, it will be a night to honour our 2019 stars.

Best and Fairest Award

The award reserved for the best and fairest player over the course of the season, the Club’s highest individual honour.

Across the course of the season, the senior coach, along with three assistants, vote for as many players as they feel warrant a vote for each game on the following scale:
4 votes – outstanding performance
3 votes – excellent performance
2 votes – above expectation performance
1 vote – expected performance (trademark game)

A player therefore can receive a maximum of four votes from four coaches giving a maximum of 16 possible votes each round.

2018 joints winners: Breann Moody & Katie Loynes

Visy Best First Year Player Award

The award presented to the most impressive player in their debut season for the club.

2018 winner: Maddison Gay

Blues Bloods Award

The player that upholds the club’s values consistently throughout the season.

2018 winner: Katie Loynes
