McFerran: Renewed energy key to VFLW success

McFerran previews 2019 VFLW season Shannon McFerran spoke to The VFL Show on SEN 1116 about the upcoming VFLW season for Carlton.

Carlton VFLW senior coach Shannon McFerran believes a new-look Blues list will bring “renewed energy” to the team.

McFerran, who is in her second year as coach of the Blues’ VFLW side, is looking forward to seeing what her players can do in the upcoming season.

“We’ve got 25 new players coming on board: with that comes a renewed energy and a sense of excitement,” she told the VFL Show.

“They’re just ready to go, ready to learn, ready to have a crack on the weekend. It should be really good.”

Personally, McFerran is excited about the opportunity to work closely with the players to help better their game during the season.

“We’ve got a really good mix of players with a lot of speed,” she said.

“It gives us a really good opportunity to be able to develop these players and they get to do that wearing a Carlton jumper. There were lots of smiles at the jumper presentation.”

As an AFLW assistant coach, McFerran has been learning off the inaugural AFL Coaches Association AFLW Senior Coach of the Year, Daniel Harford.

Preparing for her second season in the role as VFLW senior coach, McFerran said she had been working closely with her AFLW counterpart.

“‘Harf’ is very genuine in his approach as a coach,” McFerran said.

“He can be quite emotional at times. Sometimes that’s really, really important. to be able to wear your heart on your sleeve and you can learn a lot about a person from that.”

McFerran is also currently part of the She Can Coach program, which is designed to aid the development of the next wave of female coaches in Victoria.

She feels privileged to be a part of the program and hopes that she can transfer these skills into the VFLW season.

“It’s been a really good experience and it’s also really nice to be able to share that with other female coaches in the same space."

The Blues will play their first VFLW game of the year on Saturday at 11.45am against Casey at Casey Fields.
