CARLTON’s four-point victory over Fremantle at Optus Stadium will go down as one of the more memorable in its recent history — even for Blues stalwart Kade Simpson.

The dependable backman was integral in the come-from-behind victory in the west, finishing with four rebound 50s, 14 pressure acts and a crucial goal in the final quarter.

Simpson spoke to ABC Grandstand following the rousing victory in enemy territory.

“It’s a pretty great feeling right at the moment,” Simpson said.

“There isn’t too many times with under a minute to go that your down by a goal and get it done,” Simpson said.

The veteran was pivotal in Carlton’s fightback from the opening change, with the Blues’ backline not conceding an inside 50 for the opening 20 minutes of the second term.

Simpson was joined by Jacob Weitering, Caleb Marchbank and returning key back Liam Jones in what was a tireless defensive performance.

The 35-year-old spoke on the Blues’ turnaround after a less than inspiring start left them with a five-goal deficit at quarter time.

“It’s probably something we need to look at because I think the last three weeks we haven’t started well,” he said.

“But one thing we have shown is we’ve been able to respond and get the game back on our terms in an arm wrestle.”

Simpson referenced the quarter-time address from interim coach David Teague for sparking the Blues’ drive around the contest.

“They were smacking us around the ball, ground ball gets and tackles,” he said.

“So really that was the message, to dial up in the area. Put the game back in the contest because it was probably a bit free-flowing and they were definitely on top.”
