THIS weekend presents an exciting challenge for Lochie O’Brien and his emerging Carlton teammates.

On the back of five wins from the last seven matches, a significant test awaits the Blues in the form of the reigning premier.

With Carlton ready to show its wares against West Coast at Marvel Stadium, O’Brien believed it was a chance to test themselves against the best.

“The boys are really looking forward to it,” O’Brien said.

“They’re the reigning premiers from last year and they’re starting to find some form again.

“This weekend will be a really good opportunity to show people and show ourselves what we can really do against those top-four teams.”

Since returning to the senior line-up in Round 12, O’Brien has enjoyed a solid run of form, averaging over 13 disposals a game and bringing his strengths to the fore.

Labelled by Brent Stanton as “one of the best kicks at the Club”, O’Brien said he would continue to back his left foot in.

“’Stants’ is trying to pump we up a bit there,” he said.

“My kicking is a strength of mine and it’s something I’m continuing to work on.

“Being my mentor, [Stanton] is a big advocate - and ‘Teaguey’ as well - that strengths are something you need to bring week in, week out.”

Hailing the influence of Stanton, O’Brien said “confidence is growing” in his own game and across the playing group.

However, as the 19-year-old put it, there’s still a lot of growth to come.

“I still have a fair bit to go,” he said.

“This year, I wasn’t as fit as I was last year. I’m looking forward to my first full pre-season… the physical side of the game is something I’m growing.

“We’re freeing ourselves up a bit, which has brought me into the game a lot more.”
