CARLTON'S new Head of Development can’t wait to get stuck in.

A fortnight ago, Luke Power was announced as the newest arrival at Ikon Park, overseeing the progression of the Club’s emerging list.

Power needs no introduction to the football world, having starred in three premierships for Brisbane on the way to over 300 games with the Lions and Giants.

However, it’s his work post-playing career which will hold the Blues in good stead going forward.

Power arrives after spending five years at GWS in a coaching capacity, before spending the last three years as the coach of the AFL Academy, developing the best young talent in the country.

“My new role will be the Head of Development. Basically, it entails assisting the players in their growth as players and as people,” Power said.

“A lot attracted me to Carlton. It’s a big club with a lot of a history and a great supporter base and membership base: they’re doing really, really good things both on and off the field.”

Working with and developing young talent is a clear passion for Power, who has coached the likes of Paddy Dow, Lochie O’Brien and Sam Walsh with the AFL Academy.

It’s no surprise, then, that the make-up of the Carlton list is something which attracted him to the role.

“The demographic is one that I really enjoy working with and I feel I could make a really big impact on,” he said.

“There are a lot of young players and there are a lot of players who I’m fortunate enough to have relationships who have come through the AFL talent pathways.

“The age of the playing group is one which I believe I can add to and impact.”

Identifying the need to build relationships across the playing group, Power said the main focus would be maximising the potential of all those pulling on the Navy Blue jumper.

“The key for any coach is to be able to build relationships with the players,” he said.

“That will be the main thing which I’ll look to come in and do, so I can about how best to develop them.”
