THERE were many reasons driving Jack Martin’s move to the Blues at the end of the 2019 season.
The talented forward has spoken openly about a number of them: his wish to play in Melbourne, playing in front of roaring crowds (albeit – now, eventually) and to be part of one of the oldest and proudest clubs in the competition.
There was also another driving factor in Martin’s move, the ability to play beside one of his idols – Eddie Betts.
It was nearly a dream come true for the new Blue, set to line-up with Betts in Round 1 against Richmond.
A calf strain for the veteran Blue would however derail any plans, but it has given Martin something to look forward to in Round 2.
“We pretty much did a whole pre-season and then he goes down a week before Round 1,” Martin told the WA Blues.
“I was fuming I wasn’t able to get out there and play alongside a champion of the game.
“He’s fit and firing and he’s back into full training now. I can’t wait.
“We’re only three weeks away now. It will be good to get out there and play alongside him.”
Martin’s time at Ikon Park has been an overwhelmingly positive experience, even despite all of the interruptions brought on by COVID-19.
It has also brought upon new opportunities that he has relished.
Playing under Senior Coach David Teague and alongside Patrick Cripps ranking particularly high on Martin’s list.
He outlined the co-captain as one of his biggest influences since arriving at the Club.
“My biggest influence, I think ‘Crippa’: he’s taken me under his wing and we’ve gotten on really well,” he said.
“[Teague’s] been awesome ever since myself and partner did move to Melbourne.
“He’s definitely made the transition a lot easier.”
