“ALL our names sound pretty cute together so that’s a bonus.”

For Carlton’s pick No.12 in last night’s NAB AFL Women’s Draft Mimi Hill, getting drafted alongside two other quality players will be a highlight of her arrival at Ikon Park.

Hill was the first of three selections made by the Blues on the night, shortly followed by Daisy Walker at pick No.28 and Winnie Laing at pick No.36.

“I met Winnie in under-16s Vic Metro and we actually got along really well and hung out quite a lot, so I was really excited to hear that she was going to Carlton as well,” Hill said.

“Daisy I don’t know her as well, but I’ve done a few online fitness Zoom calls with her and she was really nice and we get along as well.”

Not expecting to be selected as high in the draft order as Carlton’s first pick, when Hill’s name was read out it was a complete surprise.

Sitting at home with family watching the first ever virtual draft, Hill could hardly believe when he name was called.

“We were just sitting on the couch and I really wasn’t expecting to go that early, so I was kind of just not really focusing and then I heard ‘Mimi Hill’ and I jumped up and the whole family was just like what is going on,” she said.

“I wasn’t really emotional, I was more excited and I was just jumping around and then my phone went off.

“I got heaps of calls from some of the girls which was really nice and I felt really welcomed as soon as I got drafted.”

“It was always my secret hope that they were interested, and they would take me but I didn’t want to get my hopes up, so I didn’t want to think that they would.”

Hill arrives at Carlton as a speedy winger with experience in the midfield and hopes to learn off a certain Blue she’s admired over the last three seasons.

“I really am impressed with how Georgia Gee goes about her training and games,” she said.

“She’s just a weapon and some of her tackles I really admire so I’d like to learn a bit from her.”
