FOLLOWING the Carlton Reserves’ 20-point victory against Port Melbourne on Sunday, VFL Senior Coach Luke Power spoke of his pride for the team in bringing home their first win for the season.

After a one-point loss in Round 3 against Collingwood, the challenge was there for the Blues to turn the result around back on home deck against the Borough.

Now, focus shifts to tomorrow's clash back at home against Geelong.

“Very happy and very proud of the effort… it's nice that guys could come today and take their opportunity,” Power said.

“It probably wasn't totally the game that we wanted… and I just felt the game probably moved a little bit too quickly at times.”

However, not too quickly to be able to get the job done.

The Blues were challenged and lost their lead towards the beginning of the final quarter, but were able to record the final four goals of the game in the win.

In a team with seven AFL-listed players featuring, with just one of those having senior experience, the connection of all players - both AFL and VFL-listed - was evident.

The team has been building and working through the lessons of previous weeks: after things haven’t gone quite their way, Power was pleased to see the desired outcome achieved.

“The team gets acknowledged, and then individuals get acknowledged off the back of the team doing well,” he said.

It’s not in nature for a coach to individualise their players, but there were a few special mentions, including Ashton Moir for his contest and pressure, as well as defender Michael Lewis for his development, keeping Port Melbourne’s Billy Gowers to just one goal.

“Ashton's one of them. We had a big focus on Ashton's contest and his pressure this week. He continued to tackle and off the back of it today, he got some rewards with his ability to hit the scoreboard.

“We're really happy with [Lewis’] rate of development. Every time he comes into these four walls, he comes in and he makes himself a better player.”

Post-match, players and coaches couldn’t hold back the smiles in the Club rooms, with eight players singing the song for the first time.

“They deserve the accolades,” Power said.

“In each game, we've given ourselves a chance to win. And that's all you can ask, really.”

The Blues will look to continue their improvement with another home game to come, as they face off against Geelong this Saturday at IKON Park in search of their second win of the season.
