Summer's first wave of heat greeted Carlton players as they competed in a time trial at Melbourne University this morning.

Players completed five laps of the track in trying conditions.

Carlton's High Performance Manager David Buttifant says he was pleased with the effort.

"The boys collectively came back in reasonably good condition and we have some fantastic results there, which is impressive at this time of year," Buttifant said.

"Hopefully when we get back from Flagstaff the results are even better."

The heat didn’t trouble Ed Curnow or Tom Bell who led the pack – Curnow then showing why he was named Best Clubman this year, by running back out to spur on his teammates after he finished.

Buttifant says it's a testament to Curnow's character and athleticism.

"When you have someone of his calibre it sets a benchmark for people to chase. He was outstanding and Belly (Tom Bell) was outstanding as well."
