BRET Thornton has been rewarded for his improved form at Carlton with a new one-year contract.

The 27-year-old utility finished 2010 in the VFL and with his career in doubt.

But he showed his versatility this season, managing 20 senior games as he switched from defence to the forward line, where he booted 13 goals.

Thornton's manager Anthony McConville confirmed the new deal on Thursday afternoon.

"We agreed earlier this week on Bret's contract, and he's happy to remain a Blue for another 12 months," McConville told Trade Week Radio on afl.com.au.

"[Playing forward] was something that Bret was hoping to get an opportunity to do this year, particularly given the fact that he's been a defender all his career.

"He's shown that he's got two strings to his bow."
