Dylan Buckley has been named in a forward pocket for his first senior game for Carlton – just as his father Jim was when the three-time Premiership player and club best and fairest made his debut for the Blues almost 40 years ago.
Buckley, who becomes Carlton’s 1145th senior footballer since the VFL’s foundation season of 1897, is one of four inclusions to Carlton's 22-man team for Saturday night’s match with Geelong at Eithad Stadium.
Also named is the reigning John Nicholls Medallist Heath Scotland, having completed a two-match club-imposed suspension, Shaun Hampson, having recovered from surgery to have his appendix removed, and Aaron Joseph, having impressed for the Northern Blues.
Hampson has been named at full-forward alongside Buckley, with Scotland and Joseph on interchange. Making way is Tom Bell, Josh Bootsma, Levi Casboult and Jeremy Laidler, all omitted.
Taken with Carlton’s third round selection (No.62 overall) in the 2011 national draft under the father/son rule, Buckley will be 20 years and 28 days old when he chests the banner for the team’s third round match on Saturday night.
Jim was just 16 years 200 days old when he first played in 1976, joining Ted Pollock (Round 9, 1930) as Carlton’s youngest debutant. It happened in the 11th round game against Footscray at the Western Oval, and Buckley was part of the team (whose members included John O’Connell and Danny Halloran, both since deceased) which lost to the Bulldogs by 17 points.
