THE trade which brought Mitch McGovern to Carlton was the expected outcome, according to Stephen Silvagni.

Carlton acquired the exciting forward this morning, along with Adelaide’s future third-round selection. In return, the Blues traded pick Nos.26 and 28, a future fifth-round selection and state league pre-selection Shane McAdam.

Speaking to NAB Trade Radio, Silvagni said the deal which got the Blues their man was one which didn’t yield many surprises.

“We thought that those two picks would have to be part of the deal, that was always part of our planning,” Silvagni said.

“Generally a fair bit of homework is done before the trade period.”

With McGovern secured, Silvagni said attention would turn to the Blues’ other targets with the trade period to go for another week.

He said the Blues would focus on players such as Will Setterfield, who nominated Carlton as his club of choice on Monday.

“We’re in discussions with the Giants and we’re working towards a deal on Will Setterfield. Hopefully we can work it through, obviously Will is contracted,” Silvagni said.

“We’ll see how we go there. We also want to get a couple of kids out of this draft as well.

“There’s still a week to go, so you never know what may pop up.”

After this morning’s trade, Carlton’s first two selections in this year’s draft are pick Nos.1 and 43.

Silvagni reiterated the Blues don’t expect to trade the first selection: however, he maintained the Club would entertain offers if it was to Carlton’s benefit.

“Pick one was highly unlikely, and you never say no. We were receptive to suggestions, it’s not as if it’s off the table — but it’d have to be a very good deal.”
