Carlton’s David Ellard, Zach Tuohy and Ed Curnow visited the Royal Children’s Hospital on Tuesday morning to brighten the day of some young cancer patients.

When the Blues take to the field against Essendon this weekend they will be on a mission to raise as much money as they can for the Steven Walter Children’s Cancer Foundation, which raises money for childhood cancer research.

Thanks to Hyundai Help for Kids Foundation, $1000 will be donated to Steven Walter Children’s Cancer Foundation for every goal Carlton kicks at the MCG this Saturday 30 August.

The Foundation’s Sue Walter says they’re hoping to fund a new research program that looks at how cancer treatments can be tailored to suit each individual patient.

“Our DNA is our genetic fingerprint and what makes us all different from each other. Research has shown that just as our DNA is different, each cancer has its own unique characteristics that can be targeted through specific treatments,” Walter said.

“Thanks to Hyundai Help for Kids and the Carlton Football Club, Steven Walter Children’s Cancer Foundation is funding a cutting edge new research program being conducted by Professor Paul Ekert at Murdoch Children’s Research Institute. It will be looking at how we can target the genetic code behind these cancers and treat them more effectively."

Volunteers from the Steven Walter Children’s Cancer Foundation will be at Carlton’s clash with Essendon on Saturday 30 collecting donations.

About Steven Walter Children’s Cancer Foundation

Steven Walter Children’s Cancer Foundation originated in 2001 born from the wishes of Steven Walter, a young man who died in 2000 at the age of 19 after an 8 year battle with cancer. In his final days, Steven wrote a powerful letter to his family and friends asking them to raise money for childhood cancer research “so that one day no other kid would have to go through what I’ve been through”.
