CARLTON defender Aaron Joseph looked to the sky ever so briefly when Brock McLean's mongrel punt sailed through to secure the four-point win over Richmond at the MCG on Saturday night.

Maybe the bloke upstairs was a Carlton fan, he thought to himself.

"The footy gods looked after us and it just turned out well," he said after the match in the buzzing Carlton rooms, of the win that keeps the Blues in the finals hunt for 2013.

"We're still there. Finals look out. We might still be there with a chance."

Joseph admitted the Blues cut it very fine. They trailed by 13 points well into time-on of what was a marathon of a final quarter (more than 36 minutes), but the mood was positive throughout.

"You can't think negative when you're out there but we needed to win a few clearances from then on just to stay in it," he said.

"We just dug deep. We knew our season was on the line and we just found a way."

The Blues have eked out a pair of wins in the last fortnight with a host of injured top line players, as well as having their skipper, Chris Judd, sidelined through suspension.

"It's good to see the depth of our footy club when we have a few injuries," he said.

"Guys like Tom Bell gets a chance and it's just a credit to the boys to play well and get us over the line."
