Day three of the AFL Trade Period has wrapped up and so far the Blues have finalised just the one deal.

Lachie Henderson has been traded to Geelong in exchange for the Cats’ first-round draft pick next year.

It’s the first time in AFL history a future pick has been traded.

Blues General Manager of List Management and Strategy Stephen Silvagni says it’s a good result.

“It will be aligned where Geelong finish on the ladder next year, so we’re hoping they finish lower!” Silvagni said.

“That pick enables us to do a number of things: we can hold onto that pick and go to the draft next year, we can on-trade that pick for future picks, or we can trade that pick for a player.

“If we were going to do anything with that pick it would certainly be for a younger player, so it’s actually quite valuable.”

The Henderson deal came as no surprise to Blues fans, after the out-of-contract 25-year-old requested to be traded in August.

Carlton’s recruiting team remains in talks with a number of clubs and Silvagni says more Blues could be on the move.

“There’s Chris Yarran who wants to get to Richmond but who is a contracted player with the Carlton Football Club; there’s Tom Bell who wants to get home to Brisbane but he’s contracted to us as well,” Silvagni said.

“We’re trying to work with those players and the clubs that they want to try and get to, so if there can be a good outcome for both clubs we’ll do those deals.”

Meanwhile Silvagni confirmed on Monday that he’s been in talks with Greater Western Sydney on a possible trade involving Giants Lachie Plowman and Andrew Phillips.
