Carlton has ruled out recruiting Western Bulldog Adam Cooney.

National recruiting manager Shane Rogers says Liam Jones is the Club’s priority, and while the Bulldogs put forward Cooney’s name as part of a possible deal, the 2008 Brownlow medalist won’t be heading to Visy Park.

However Jones is firmly in Carlton’s sights.

“Liam’s committed to us and we’ve committed to him – we’re working very tirelessly with the Bulldogs to try and arrange a deal,” Rogers said.

“We think he (Jones) can come and address some of the needs as a key forward for us.

“At the Bulldogs he probably didn’t have a lot of support around him, but we’ve got a couple of big tall blokes that he’ll get the third defender (or) the second defender – so he should work out fairly well if we can negotiate that deal with the Dogs.”

Fellow Bulldog Jason Tutt has also asked to be traded to Carlton and Rogers is hopeful that deal will be done. But Rogers has ruled out making a move on Essendon’s Ben Howlett, confirming no one at Carlton has spoken to the Bomber.

The Blues have today completed a trade with Melbourne for Jeff Garlett. In exchange, Carlton received Melbourne’s fourth round draft pick (currently 61 overall), while the Blues and the Demons traded fifth round picks to see Carlton move up the order from 83 to 79.

It’s likely the first big move the Blues will make in the trade period will be on Greater Western Sydney's Kristian Jaksch. Despite speculation he is being courted by Essendon, Rogers remains hopeful the young Giant will find his way into a navy blue jumper.

“Kristian we’ve been targeting for a long time – I think I had him at five in Australia two years ago when we picked Menzel, so we’ve rated him really highly and done a lot of work with Kristian,” Rogers said.

“He’s committed to us, so we’ve agreed to terms with his management crew. He wants to play for the Blues and we’re committed to him and we want him to come.

“He’s a long term investment, probably a 10 year player, but he’ll still need a little bit of development in his first year. That doesn’t mean he won’t play senior footy, we’ve just got to put the finishing touches onto him.”
