Carlton coach Mick Malthouse says he doesn’t mind Monday night football, but doesn’t think it should be an anomaly in the fixture.

This week’s Monday night showdown between the Blues and the Saints drew a crowd of just 26,708 to Etihad Stadium.

Crowd numbers for the post-Mother’s Day clash have been steadily declining in recent years, and this week’s poor turnout has reignited debate about whether Monday night football should be scrapped.

Speaking in his regular spot on radio Fiveaa, Malthouse said the way Monday night football is currently scheduled is a “dog’s breakfast”.

He says Monday night footy should be played every week – or not at all.

“If you’re going to have Monday football, you have to have Monday on a regular basis, because people are habitual (and) they want something that is constant,” Malthouse said.

“You can’t just have one off and then go ‘that’s your Monday for the year, see you later’.

“You can’t just sit back and say that people are going to sit there on a Monday night and go ‘well, there are other shows I’ve been watching’... you’ve got to win the audience over by the game.”

Carlton beat the Saints by 32-points to notch up the team’s third win of the season.

Malthouse said he’s “delighted” with the win and believes it will restore confidence in his players.
