CARLTON midfielder Matthew Cottrell has been rewarded for his outstanding consistency, re-signing with the Club for a further three years. 

Grandson of former Blue Len Cottrell, the 24-year-old was a Bluebagger from birth and will now remain in the guernsey until at least the end of 2027. 

Now writing his own story at Carlton, Cottrell is known for his gut-running and elite ability to cover the ground quickly.  

He personifies the Blues’ mantra of ‘being a good teammate’, with Cottrell’s roles and behaviours often going under the radar publicly, meanwhile he has grown into a highly-valued figure at the Club. 

Making his mark as a high half-forward who covers all areas of the ground, his work rate has seen him become admired by the Carlton faithful. 

Cottrell’s story is one of inspired resilience, arriving at the Blues in 2019 through the pre-season supplemental selection period, before earning his debut in 2020, becoming an instant cult figure that year with a match-winning goal against the Swans in Round 15.  

Cottrell has thrived under the tutelage of AFL Senior Coach Michael Voss, earning an upgrade to Carlton's senior list for the 2024 campaign after spending five years on the Club's rookie list.  

Head of List Management Nick Austin said Cottrell is an understated talent in the competition.   

“Matthew is the definition of ‘team first’, which is why he has the respect of everyone at our football club,” Austin said. 

“We continue to be impressed by his work ethic, the role he plays in the side is valued highly and we know whatever challenge we throw at Matthew, he just takes it in his stride and does whatever he can to help his teammates. 

“Matthew is also a great personality around the Club, a much-loved member on and off-field who has built so many close friendships here at the Club - he simply is a great teammate. 

“We know he is only just starting on what has been a unique football journey, we can’t wait to see him continue to improve.”
