VFL Senior Coach Damian Truslove analyses the performances of the 18 AFL-listed Blues who featured for the Carlton Reserves in Round 4 VFL action.
8. Lachie Fogarty
17 disposals, seven marks, one goal
‘Fog’ played forward this week more than he played midfield - he played his role really well and ran really good patterns. He was our captain on the day and he led from the front with his communication on the field and positive reinforcement to the players.
13. Blake Acres
32 disposals, 10 intercepts, four inside 50s
Blake played on the wing and had an excellent game, he’s in very good form. He found plenty of the ball and was a good leader on the ground. He used the ball pretty well and he helped us defend in our defensive 50 a lot on the back of excellent running patterns.
15. Billy Wilson
22 disposals, seven marks, four rebound 50s
Billy Wilson gave us drive off half-back. He’s got a lot of power, and his execution of kicking going inside 50 was good. He’s continuing to improve and progressing really well: I’d say he’d be knocking on the door of AFL selection.
16. Ben Camporeale
29 disposals, nine score involvements
I thought it was Benny’s best game so far this year, as far as his running patterns and his explosion from stoppage go. He’s always tough and hard inside the contest. Unfortunately he’ll be out due to concussion this week, but he played a really solid game.
21. Lucas Camporeale
13 disposals, seven tackles
Lucas unfortunately got injured after a courageous act which saved a goal for us. He worked hard on the wing and half-forward, running really good patterns to support our defence. He was composed with ball in hand as well.
28. Harry Charleson
24 disposals, six marks
He’s had a couple of good games in a row now, playing across half-back. It was a balanced game, getting involved in our offence as well as defending his direct opponent really well. Those lockdown roles early in the year got his head in the game defensively, and now he’s getting involved in offence as well.
29. George Hewett
30 disposals, nine clearances, eight tackles
It was a typical George Hewett game, hard and tough in the contest. His transition running was better between contests, which was impressive, and he led from the front with some courageous acts.
30. Jack Ison
18 disposals, seven marks, two goals
Jack is really exciting. His pressure in our forward 50 - in particular, the second quarter - was outstanding. On the back of that, he got shots on goal: his power and his energy is really exciting. His biggest area that he’s working on is his positioning and patterns from a game plan perspective, understanding where he needs to run and position himself in both offence and defence. That’s improving each week.
31. Campbell Chesser
20 disposals, seven tackles
‘Chess’ played a bit more inside midfield this week instead of on the wing, which was good for him. He hunted the ball well and was a good outnumber player for us between contests. His attitude and energy was great all day.
34. Rob Monahan
16 disposals, seven marks
Rob played across half-back and once again gave us some drive back there with his speed. He’s working hard on his defensive craft in terms of where to position himself in different situations, and continues to improve.
36. Cooper Lord
35 disposals, 11 tackles, five clearances
‘Coop’ had 11 tackles, which really set up his game. He was hard and tough at stoppage and worked hard between contest to contest. He had an outstanding attitude in his first game back and will be knocking on the door to play AFL this week.
37. Jordan Boyd
19 disposals (90 per cent efficiency), eight marks
‘Boydy’ played quite an attacking role for us and gave us plenty of drive from half-back. He provided us with a number of deep entries for us inside 50 and was another good leader for us on the ground with his voice. He always gives us drive offensively and is always a really good competitor.
40. Hudson O’Keeffe
Seven disposals, 18 hitouts, one goal
‘Huddo’ was competitive in the air, he brought the ball to ground as a forward in aerial contests. He went in the ruck a little bit as well and his follow-up and intent to tackle around stoppages was good.
41. Matt Duffy
10 disposals, five rebound 50s
‘Duff’ continues to improve as a key defender. His spoiling is improving and he’s getting more offensive involvement on the back of that which is pleasing. He’s growing in confidence which is really good for him.
42. Adam Saad
25 disposals, seven intercepts
We saw some of the bounce and speed that we love to see from ’Saady’. He’s gradually improving every week and was really exciting for us coming off half-back, he helped our entries going inside 50.
43. Ashton Moir
13 disposals, six marks, two goals
Ashton again played a mix of forward and mid, about 50-50 of each. We saw some of Ashton’s strengths, with his ability to win one-on-one aerial contests as well as being clean on the ground, using his speed and agility. It was a step forward for Ashton.
45. Flynn Young
22 disposals, nine marks, two goals
‘Youngy’ continues to back up with good performances, hitting the scoreboard and using the ball well by foot. He played a slightly different role for us this week, playing a bit higher as a half-forward. When the ball is in his hands, we’re really happy because he uses it so well.
46. Matthew Cottrell
20 disposals, seven marks, one goal
His run from the wing, plus his speed and his power, was excellent. His ball use continues to improve and we think he’s not far off from AFL footy. I think he’s pretty close to knocking on the door.
