Growing up in Ireland, Zach Tuohy never dreamed he would one day play AFL football.

But four years after he first caught the attention of Carlton recruiters, the 23-year-old has cemented a spot at the Blues.

Tuohy has this week signed a new three-year-deal with Carlton, keeping him at the club until at least the end of 2016.

Carlton’s General Manager of Football Andrew McKay says it has been a tremendous journey for the big kicking Irishman, who began his sporting career playing Gaelic football.

“AFL is a hard game to learn when you haven’t grown up with it. To come over here as a rookie, learn the game, and be promoted to the senior list is a fantastic effort.”

“We are really pleased with the progress Zach has made, and even more pleased that he has committed to Carlton for another three years.”

Carlton Coach Mick Malthouse says Tuohy's is a wonderful story.

"I've watched him from a distance, and this year being his coach I've seen a real grim determination to be better and better every week. The way he has conducted himself, the way he has gone about it, and the way he has improved, has been fantastic."
