The performance of Carlton's Matthew Watson is one of the positives the Blues will look to take from Saturday's 36-point loss to Fremantle at Etihad Stadium.

The 21-year-old took several strong marks and kicked a goal, in what was just his 15th AFL game - and his fourth match for Carlton this season.

Watson says he believes it was discipline and hard-work, that saw him promoted from the VFL.

"I'm just trying to play consistent footy - do everything the coach tells me to do and hopefully I can finish the season off in the seniors."

Watson says while the Blues were competitive on Saturday, they struggled to match it with the Dockers in the final term.

"We thought we had a chance. We reduced the uncontested marks, which we wanted to do, but unfortunately they ran over us.

"They had more legs, more speed, and were able to get on top of us in the end, which was disappointing."

The big-kicking forward says his team will review the game and refocus - the spotlight already on the round 20 clash with the Western Bulldogs.

"You can't really think about it too much once the game is over, you have just got to focus on next week."
