In the lead-up to Round 1, we’re speaking to Carlton’s new recruits to find out a bit more about what makes them tick.

Next is rookie Blaine Johnson, who has moved to Victoria from Western Australia, where he played for South Fremantle.

1.   How would you describe your style of play?
Defensive – and I like to push up the ground.

2.   What would you say is your greatest strength?
My defensive pressure and tackling ability.

3.   Who was your football hero when you were growing up?
Nic Naitanui – he’s such an exciting player and I love watching him.

4.   Outside of the AFL, who is your sporting hero?
Ricky Ponting – he’s someone I view as a great leader and I really admire the way he went about it.

5.   When you’re not training and playing, what do you like to spend your time doing?
I love playing basketball so I spend a fair bit of my spare time doing that.

6.   Where is the best place you have ever been on a holiday?
It’s not that far away, but probably Brisbane because I have a bit of family up there and I love going up to visit them.

7.   If you had to cook to impress someone what would you cook?
Roast lamb.

8.   Favourite food?
Pasta.

9.   If you weren’t playing football, what would you be doing?
I’d get a trade – either plumbing or carpentry.

10. What are your goals for the year ahead?
To be as ready as I can be for Round 1, to have a good year in the VFL, and to put myself in the best position to go on to bigger things.
