Carlton’s 2014 John Nicholls Medal is on at Crown Palladium tonight. Here’s a snapshot of how we think the votes will unfold:

Predicted most votes: Season 2014 has clearly been a standout year for Bryce Gibbs. The 25-year-old solidified a place in the midfield and was one of Carlton’s key contributors.  Gibbs played in all 22 games and topped Carlton’s average disposal count with 24.77 per game. His form saw Gibbs earn his first nomination for the All-Australian squad.

The skipper also had another solid year and should poll well. Marc Murphy only missed two games –including the draw against Essendon after suffering concussion when he copped a heavy hit against the Power. On the field, Murphy grew in leadership in 2014 and put his stamp on the captaincy. He led by example and was third overall in the team for total disposals, second for centre clearances and second in total tackles.

Meanwhile Chris Yarran had his most consistent season to date, with his bursts of speed delivering some electrifying displays. Yarran booted 21 goals for the season, was fifth overall in the team for total disposals, and notably took the most bounces with 67 – the second highest number in the competition.

Consider: Reliable defenders Sam Rowe and Michael Jamison. Rowe had a breakout year, emerging as one of Carlton’s key pillars in defence. The 26-year-old’s endeavor saw him earn praise from coach Mick Malthouse as one of the players he has “the greatest admiration for”.

The always dependable Jamison continued his consistent form in 2014, all the while mentoring the emerging defenders including Rowe, Dylan Buckley and Matthew Watson. Jamison took on the role of deputy vice-captain this season and his leadership was clearly evident both on and off the field.

Roughie: Newcomer Andrejs Everitt who was consistent across the season. He played a number of roles during the year: halfback, half-forward and on the wing. Wherever Everitt played he had an impact.
