Carlton is set to play another Irishman this season after Ciaran Byrne was upgraded from the rookie list.

The 20-year-old from County Louth has been upgraded in place of Cameron Giles, who has been placed on the Blues’ long-term injury list.

Byrne, or “Casey” as he is known to his teammates, signed with Carlton as an International Rookie Category B at the end of the 2013 season.

He spent last year learning the game in the VFL where he ran out for 14 matches, initially playing as a forward before moving to the backline.

Byrne lined up in Carlton’s senior side for the first time in February this year, playing in the NAB Challenge game against the Eagles in Mandurah.

He has been named as one of three emergencies for Friday night’s Round 2 match against West Coast at Domain Stadium.
